You’re Foolin’ Yourself

. . . When You Try To Fool Me
A popular song from 1932.
Words and music by Al Hoffman, Ed Nelson, Al Goodhart, and Milton Ager.

Laurence Rubenstein (Milton’s nephew) says, “This is another great song discovery.  Somehow all the words seem to work (unlike some songs)  and the tune is original and catchy.  I have no idea why it only got one recording in 1932 (Gene Kardos Orchestra w/ vocal by Dick Robertson) when a song written by the same group the same year got almost 100 recordings (Auf Wiedersehen My Dear).  The latter is much more sentimental, which is probably what the world needed more then…”

Lyrics

  1. Lately I found, you’re foolin’ around
    What can the reason be?
You know that I’m true, so why aren’t you?
    Maybe, you’re just teasin’ me
You’re not treatin’ me the way you should
Let me tell you for your own good

Chorus
You’re foolin’ yourself
When ya try to fool me
No one loves ya like I do
Who ya really hurtin’, baby, when ya flirt?
Ev’ry little flirtin’ baby soon gets hurt
You’re wastin’ your time
When you’re wastin’ your love
Stick to someone who is true
I wouldn’t fool ya, honestly
You’re foolin’ yourself
When ya try to fool me

  1. It’s plain to see you’re two-timin’ me
    You’re not a true sweetheart
There’s somebody new, just good-timin’ you
You’ll be breakin’ your own heart
You’ll have no one but yourself to blame
‘Cause you’re playin’ a losin’ game
