Macushla

Macushla means “my sweetheart”. This song is from 1910.
words by Josephine V. Rowe
music by Dermot Macmurrough

From Popular Irish Songs (Dover book): The authors of this song, Josephine V. Rowe and Dermot Macmurrough, had no other popular success. But “Macushla” was so successful that its name was borrowed for a hit Ernest Ball musical in 1914. The great classical tenor John McCormack, this century’s most acclaimed singer of the Irish repertory, gave it and many popular hits of its kind a greater respectability through his performances and recordings.

Accompaniment by James Pitt-Payne:

Lyrics

  1. Macushla! Macushla!
    Your sweet voice is calling
Calling me softly again and again
    Macushla! Macushla!
    I hear its dear pleading
    My blue-eyed Macushla
    I hear it in vain
  2. Macushla! Macushla!
    Your white arms are reaching
    I feel them enfolding
    Caressing me still
Fling them out from the darkness
    My lost love, Macushla
Let them find me and bind me
    Again if they will
  3. Macushla! Macushla!
    Your red lips are saying
    That death is a dream
    And love is for aye
    Then awaken, Macushla
    Awake from your dreaming
    My blue-eyed Macushla
    Awaken to stay
