Movie Night at the musicals

Got popcorn? Got YouTube? Here are some free musicals we can watch:

“This is the Army” is WWI and WWII movie made in 1943. The background is in World War I when Irving Berlin was in the U.S. Army. He put together a musical called “Yip Yip Yaphank”. In 1942 he wrote the stage musical “This is the Army” as an update. It was based on Yaphank but has mostly new material.

James Pitt-Payne says:

“This is a fine film. There is minimal plot but great music to start and end with. We get a glimpse of Ronald Reagan explaining why he won’t get married. Irving Berlin sings how he hates to get up in the morning. But the staged musical numbers are from an era that is forgotten now and there is a very real sense of patriotism…. This is a great film for nostalgia and I commend it to you for a viewing.”

Let’s watch “South Pacific” with music by Rodgers and Hammerstein:

Let’s watch “State Fair” from 1945:
